Meet Demands of “Country of Thousands of Islands” Promote Understanding by Distance Education

In September and October, 2015, the Open University of China (OUC) utilized the Cloud Space’s “Live Classroom” to provide the local Chinese teachers in Indonesia with distance Youth Chinese Test (YCT) teacher training. 92 persons/times attended the training consisted of three sessions through distance learning network of Indonesia TRAMPIL Foundation to Chinese teachers from four cities of Bandung, Surabaya, Jakarta, and Bali simultaneously,. After the training, more than 300 students from four teaching centres participated in the YCT exam on October 11.

Since the establishment of the cooperation between the OUC and TRAMPIL Indonesia Foundation, this distance training was their very first attempt to give distance two-way live teaching to multiple teaching centres at the same time, while in the past the distance training was carried out in only one single teaching centre in Indonesia. The training lecturers’ video and teaching materials in Beijing were simultaneously transferred to the teaching centres in Indonesia, while the trainees in the teaching centres could conduct distance real-time interaction with the teacher at any time. The trainees thought highly of the training content, teachers, the platform and the overall effects. They said, “This course is the smoothest and the most helpful one since the establishment of distance interaction.” This was what they felt after they had received many distance training from other organizations, and they expressed that they hoped training of such kind could be carried out in the long term. 

In 2016, the OUC and the TRAMPIL Indonesia Foundation will cooperate to give a series of distance training courses targeted to students and Chinese teachers.

1. Pre-Exam instructions and teacher training for HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test), YCT, and BCT (Business Chinese Test);

2. Provide business Chinese training for Commercial Bank of China’s local staff in Indonesia;

3. Recruit students of degree education majoring in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) and Business Chinese. 

On January 13, 2015, Education Attache, Mr. Priyanto Wibowo from the Education Section of Indonesian Embassy in China visited the OUC and said, “Distance education is particularly suitable for the characteristics of Indonesia which has thousands of islands. I hope that with the support of the advanced educational technology, teaching methods, teaching resources of the OUC, Indonesian educational and cultural development would be better promoted. ” We will strive to work with the TRAMPIL Indonesia Foundation to build open and distance education platform, and keep exploring and practicing so as to better serve Chinese education and local Chinese teachers training. The expectation of educational and cultural cooperation between China and Indonesia put forward by the heads of states in the two countries during the APEC conference will be implemented to advance the educational and cultural exchange between China and Indonesia, which promotes the understanding between two countries.

Background Information:

On November 13, 2014, the OUC and Indonesian TRAMPIL Foundation held a ceremony to sign their MOU at OUC’s Wukesong campus. Both sides will collaboratively launch the local training of Chinese language teachers, teaching platforms that combine Chinese and Chinese culture in Indonesia, as well as carry out cooperation between non-degree and degree education institutions in other fields.

On the morning of Jan. 13, 2015, the delegates led by the Education Attache, Mr. Priyanto Wibowo from the Education Section of Indonesian Embassy in China visited the OUC. Mr. Yang Zhijian, President of the OUC and Mr. Zhang Shaogang, Vice President of the OUC exchanged in-depth views with the delegates over the topics of promoting China-Indonesia educational and cultural exchange and construction of “Indonesia Distance Education Development Ecological Chain” and a consensus was reached.
