Training outstanding Chinese language teachers plays an important role in the transmission of Chinese language and culture. The Chinese Language Center at The Open University of China (hereafter referred to as the Center) has been committed to international Chinese languageinstructor training. In 2007, the Center carried out large-scale research regarding the needs of Chinese language teachers, meeting repeatedly with expert consultants to discuss the on the ground needs of language instructor training and curriculum development. In 2010, the Center officially launched its “MyEChinese Chinese Teacher Training”(http://t.myechinese.com )platform.
The “MyEChinese Chinese Teacher Training” platform provides not only personalized courses for employed and prospective Chinese languageteachers, but also customized training courses and services for all kinds of institutions related to Chinese language instruction at home and abroad. More than 80 courses have been created according to learners’ on the ground needs, and these courses have received much praise since their introduction for their excellent quality.
Besides steadily promoting the construction of the “MyEChinese_Chinese Teacher Training” platform, the Center has also actively explored an “online + offline” hybrid mode of teacher training. At present, the Center has developed a series of practical training courses, such as its “Chinese Volunteer Teacher Training,” “Chinese Teacher Training Abroad,” “Remote International Chinese Teacher Training,” and others. Learners can choose personalized learning plans that combine online and offline courses according to their specific needs,in turn leading to autonomous learning.
Whether online or offline, all courses are taught by senior experts, scholars, professors and outstanding Chinese language instructors active in classrooms at home and abroad. Their fields of research relate to Chinese language instruction, education and linguistics. At thesame time, professional tutors provide students with guidance after class.
In order to facilitate more expansive exchange of research and ideas related to international Chinese language instruction inside and outside the field, in 2011 and 2012, the Chinese Language Center at The Open University of China successfully held a series of two “International Chinese Teacher Training Forums,” attracting Chinese education elites from more than 70 universities and research institutions tooffer advice and suggestions. Insiders within the field of Chinese language instruction agree that the Open University of China has unique advantages in distance education. The Center will make a difference in international teacher training, especially for the localization of Chinese language instruction abroad.
At present, we have established gateways for cooperation with Chinese language teaching institutions in the United States, Thailand, Indonesia, Spain, Ecuador and other countries in order to train Chinese language teachers together. Besides sending outstanding Chinese language instructors to foreign countries, the Center also benefits from the advantages of the Open University of China as it uses modern education technology in training Chinese language instructors native to their country of residence.
