Since America’s SCOLA satellite television began broadcasting its all-Mandarin TV teaching programs in 1996, the Chinese Language Centerat The Open University of China has been committed to teaching Mandarin to foreign learners. After continued exploration, we have gradually developed a system that combines distance education curricula, teaching, testing and learning support and service with offline teaching services based on the “MyEChinese” platform. This program forms a seamless and far-reaching learning environment by spreading educational content, services and digital publishing through distribution channels as the internet, radio and television, mobile communication, and digital learning terminals. It allows any student to access course content and learning support related to Chinese language and culture without restrictions on when, where, or how.
We not only provide personalized courses on Chinese language and culture for individual learners – we also offer customized training courses and services to all kinds of educational institutions and Chinese language teaching organizations at home and abroad. At present, wehave launched a number of Chinese linguistic and cultural training courses at various levels, satisfying the varied needs of different learners.
We will spare no effort to provide the best curriculum, the most outstanding teachers, and the most personalized services for our learners.
At present, our main offerings (outlined below) draw upon hybrid online and offline learning styles, distance and classroom education, and self-study and face-to-face instruction, giving learners the opportunity to choose courses according to their actual needs as they continue their lifelong learning.
The class time and learning methods of our short-term intensive courses are flexible, giving students the flexibility to choose a course of study that fits their actual needs. After completing the term of study, learners can obtain a certificate of completion for their course. Those who meet certain qualifications can also earn official certifications.
Our language preparatory courses focus on the comprehensive cultivation of learners’ listening, speaking, reading and writing. The hybrid online instruction and offline face-to-face teaching styles work in unison throughout the course duration, which runs between one to two years. At the end of the term, those who pass certain standards can apply to universities to continue their studies.
Long-term in-service training programs run for half a year or more, and are divided into four levels: elementary, rising, intermediate, and advanced, each of which consists of 432 class hours. At the end of the term, those who pass certain qualifications can obtain a certificate of qualification for in-service training.
According to the characteristics of distance education, our team of teachers is comprised of head teachers, host teachers, and tutor teachers, who respectively are responsible for curriculum formation, teaching resources planning and use, and tutoring support services. Every teacher has a background in international Chinese language education as well as experience in distance learning. In accordance with the format of distance education, they provide the dually combined services of combining online learning with face-to-face instruction and fusing real-time teaching with asynchronous instruction.
In the span of fifteen years, we at the Center have developed more than 30 multimedia teaching resource products for teaching Mandarin tonon-native speakers, including system learning, short-term intensive courses, materials for infants, elementary school and middle school students, business Chinese, tourism Chinese, new HSK preparation, and more. In addition, our auxiliary teaching resources and tools include those that focus on pronunciation, grammar and Chinese characters. Materials that cover Chinese culture continue to be developed and translated into English, French, Thai, Korean, and German. In addition to books, tapes/CD/MP3 players, video/VCD/DVD/MP4 players, CD-ROM software and internet courseware, our product platforms continue to be developed, as evidenced by new resources that fit the varied needs of learners. New products are compatible with the iPad, iPhone, and other smart phones, and our new “smart reading pen” does not require learners to change their traditional reading habits.
After years of research and experience, we developed a hybrid learning method based on the MyEChinese distance education platform. Incorporating formal instruction with informal learning, it in turn creates a seamless connection between Chinese language acquisition and learners’ daily lives, improving efficiency and reduce costs. Students can now learn Chinese freely and happily.
