Compared with alphabetic writing, Chinese characters have certain functions of meaning expressing, activating people’s imagination in semantics and pronunciation. Chinese characters have a large number of pictophonetic characters. The meaning part shows that the character is related to a certain object while the sound part shows approximately the pronunciation of the character. E.g. “爸(dad)” (click to play): the meaning part is “父(father)”, indicating father; the sound part is “巴(ba)”, indicating the pronunciation. Some characters, such as “吃(to eat)”and “喝(to drink)”, have a common part“口(mouth)”, because they are all related to the character 嘴(mouth); some characters, such as “江(river)”, “湖(lake)” and “海(sea)”, have a common part “水”, because they are all related to “水(water)”. As a result, learning Chinese characters by means of understanding its characteristics will achieve twice the result with only half the effort.
